HYDRATING INGREDIENTS YOUR SKIN NEEEDS

PSA: IT ALL STARTS WITH HYDRATION

The first step to a healthy face is a hydrated one… but achieving this isn’t always as easy as it sounds.

Hydrated skin can be highly dependent on external factors like the weather, or the products you’re using. As the seasons change, and the temperature falls, you’re left with two options; purchasing a plane ticket to a warmer destination or a moisturising skincare routine.

First things first, hydrating ingredients assist your skin in absorbing water and moisturising ingredients help retain the hydration, preventing water loss.

AKA

HYDRATING INGREDIENTS = ABSORB WATER

MOISTURISING INGREDIENTS = SEAL IN THE HYDRATION

Most moisturisers contain a blend of moisturising and hydrating ingredients but sometimes it’s just not enough. And this is where hydrating serums and cleansers enter the chat. These products add additional hydration which adds to that supple, glowy look healthy skin tends to give off.

As with all skincare products and routines, it’s totally dependent on your skin type and skincare concerns.

Types

Dry Skin lacks moisture and tends to have a weakened skin barrier so both hydrating ingredients are needed to rehydrate and seal.

Oily Skin, also requires hydration – yes you read correctly, oily skin needs hydrating too. But definitely not anything too heavy as that can block your pores which can lead to breakouts.

Combination Skin lacks moisture in some areas and hydration in others.

Dehydrated Skin tends to loose more water than it takes in, so hydrating and sealing ingredients are needed to hydrate it.

Now that you’re equipped with the basics, we’ve listed some of our hydrating hero’s below to get you started on your moisturised suppleness journey.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

A humectant (draws water to itself) capable of holding up to 1,000 times its weight, HA restores hydration and elasticity in the skin. This substance can also be found in your body, meaning this natural ingredient is likely than most to cause any sort of irritation.

Glycerin

Typically found in cleansers and moisturisers, this humectant is also a natural substance of the body. Its main role is to hydrate and support the skin barrier function as it prevents water loss in the skin.

Ceramides

Acting as part of the skin’s security, they make up the skins outer layer - epidermis. Creating a barrier to prevent permeability, locking in moisture.

Vitamin E

Generally absorbed by foods we eat, this ingredient when applied to skin helps your skin absorb water while trapping it within. It’s soothing properties also work on sealing the cracks within the skin’s barriers ensuring no water irritants can penetrate it.

Squalane

Boosting hydration and naturally found in the body but declines as you age, squalane creates a protective shield.  Non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog the pores) this ingredients mimics natural skin oils, softening and smoothing.

Fatty Alcohols

No, not all alcohols are bad for the skin… You’ll find these on the ingredients list noted as cetyl, stearyl, and cetearyl alcohol. Deriving from natural sources like coconut or palm oil, fatty alcohols don’t tend to be irritating. They create a barrier on the skin’s surface, locking in moisture and preventing water loss.
